What is Safeledger+

The Safeledger+ is a digital paper wallet in which one can store and encrypt all his/her wallet data e.g. log in info, pass-phrases, wallet addresses, and Two Factor Authentication (2FA) recovery codes. Most people store their login info on a piece of paper / notebook, which can become a long list as there are many exchanges and wallets that all require a different password. Keeping this data on your computer is not recommended as it can get compromised and storing it on a paper wallet can be a risk as these are merely fragile paper sheets that can get ruined, lost, or destroyed.

Safeledger+ provides the solution for a safer way of storing this info.

How does it work? The Safeledger+ is essentially a USB drive covered in a Zinc Alloy Metal casing, making it able to withstand water, dust, and shock damage. It uses AES 256 encryption to securely encrypt all data stored onto the Safeledger+. AES 256 is a high-end type of encryption that is also used by the NSA for Top Secret information.

The Safeledger+ comes preloaded with instructions, popular wallets, and their offer of coins. A strong point of this product is the user-friendly interface which allows for the easy creation or deletion of new wallets and coins. This ensures a clear and organized view of all your data.

Additional safety measures

Upon closing the Safeledger+ window, a notification pops up stating that the recently typed memory has automatically been wiped, ensuring that no sensitive information, such as memory of typed in wallet addresses / passwords, remains on the computer when finished using the Safeledger+.

Furthermore, there is a self-destruct feature that is initiated when too many failed login attempts are made. The exact options and settings for this feature are customizable and look like this:

  • Consecutive login failure attempts (customizable between 3 to 10)
  • Consecutive lockout attempts (customizable between 3 to 10)
  • Minutes to wait between lockouts (customizable between 15 minutes and 24 hours)

If there have been X consecutive failed login attempts, the Safeledger+ starts the ‘’lockout feature’’. Meaning you are not able to attempt another log in for an X amount of time.

If the maximum amount of lockout is reached, the Safeledger+ erases all data. This ensures that if the product ever were to be stolen, all passwords and information will be deleted automatically.

Furthermore, just like a paper wallet, it is not recommended to be connected to the internet when using the Safeledger+. Not being connected to the internet eliminates the possibility of having your information send out online. With this in mind, the Safeledger+ has been designed to not need an internet connection.

Why buy the Safeledger+

Although a regular USB drive can be encrypted for free online, the actual data stored on it is not. The Safeledger+ however does encrypt the wallet, the data, has multiple security measures in place, and enjoys a user-friendly interface which a regular USB won’t have.  If you aren’t the ‘’techy’’ type or don’t want to spend time learning how to encrypt a wallet, the features of the Safeledger+ make it a good investment.

Features that make the Safeledger+ worthwhile:

  • Organized and user-friendly interface
  • Go from Windows to Mac and back on one device
  • Extra security measures
  • Live help and technical support
  • Durable casing
  • Waterproof
  • High-end encryption

Future plans

  • Software only download, allowing people to use their own USB drive but still benefit from the user interface and security of the Safeledger+.

Positive sides

  • The coding is mostly open source (the actual encryption process is closed code for security reasons).
  • No internet connection required
  • Durable USB casing (waterproof, dustproof, shockproof)
  • High grade security

Negative sides

  • Trust barrier
The one point that might hold back potential buyers of the Safeledger+ is the trust aspect. The Safeledger+ uses open source code and the software is designed to work offline to help maintain a level of trust amongst the community. Similar companies such as Trezor and Ledger Nano S faced the same ordeal upon entering the market. This being said, Safeledger as a company offers product support, an official website, and is active on social media channels. It can be expected to be a legitimate company that aims to help people with the safe storing of data.
